Espey WDMS500 – the new shaft seal for agitators the “Feodor Burgmann Handelsgesellschaft in technischen Artikeln” company in Dresden, and it was not long before he astounded the engineers at the time with the first mechanically braided self-lubricating stuffing box packing.
In the course of the following decades the young company developed into a leading seal manufacturer, with a number of branch operations and production facilities being established in and outside Germany in spite of fluctuating economic conditions. However, the end of the Second World War also meant the end of the Dresden era. In July 1945 Feodor Burgmann Jr. was granted a new operating licence with which he set about re-establishing the company at new premises in Seeleiten on Lake Starnberg in Bavaria, and in 1951 he relocated company headquarters to Wolfratshausen. 1962 saw the commencement of development and production of mechanical seals, followed by expansion joints in 1965. The setting up of subsidiaries in the USA, Brazil and Switzerland in 1977 constituted the first steps towards internationalization, after which Plant 2 in Eurasburg was built in 1981. In 1993 Burgmann acquired a majority interest in the Scandinavian KE Group, and in 1998 took over the Italian BT Group and Gustav Espey GmbH in Duisburg/Germany on a 100% basis.
Today the Group comprises over 50 subsidiaries, joint ventures and affiliated companies worldwide. In the course of 120 years since its founding, Burgmann has played a decisive role in developing seal technology, and throughout that time its concentration on seals as core business activity has guaranteed the company’s success.
Since March 2004 Burgmann is one of ten independent operative business groups in the german Freudenberg Group, Weinheim and forms together with Eagle Industry Japan a worldwide alliance (EBI) for sealing technology.
